Sri Lankan players who won the world

  There are many Sri Lankan athletes who have competed at the international level in various sports.    Here are a few notable examples.

  Muttiah Muralitharan


Muttiah Muralitharan is recognized as one of the finest spin spinners in cricket history. He represented the Sri Lankan national cricket team from 1992 to 2011, capturing 534 One Day International and 800 Test wickets, the most by any player in the history of the game. Additionally, he is the only player to have more than 1000 international wickets across all formats. Muralitharan was renowned for his distinctive and unconventional bowling motion, in which he flicked his wrist to throw the ball. His efforts enabled Sri Lanka to triumph in a number of competitions, including the 1996 Cricket World Cup. He has been interested in coaching and mentoring young cricket players in Sri Lanka and other countries after his retirement.

Kumar Sangakkara


Known as one of the best batsmen in the history of the game, Kumar Sangakkara is a former captain and cricketer for Sri Lanka. From 2000 to 2015, he was a member of the Sri Lankan national cricket squad, playing in Test and ODI cricket and amassing over 12,000 runs. Additionally, he is one of the rare cricketers to achieve four consecutive ODI century. Sangakkara was renowned for his graceful stroke-play, shrewd captaincy, and managerial abilities. He continued to be active in cricket administration after retiring, holding the position of president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the organization in charge of maintaining cricket's rules.





Susanthika Jayasinghe

 is a former sprinter best known for taking home the silver medal in the 200-meter event at the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000. She remains one of Sri Lanka's most successful athletes in history and was the first Sri Lankan woman to earn an Olympic medal. At the Asian and Common wealth Games, she also took home a number of medals, including the gold medal in the 200-meter event in 1997.

 A former middle-distance runner, became the first Sri Lankan to earn an Olympic medal when he took home the silver medal in the 400-meter hurdles event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. At the Asian Games in 1951 in New Delhi, he also won a number of medals, including the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles event. White was well-known for his innate athletic talent as well as his tenacious work ethic. In 1952, he gave up competing in athletics and went on to become a prosperous businessman and philanthropist who supported numerous sports programs in Sri Lanka


 

 Mahela Jayawardhana



 Mahela Jayewardene is recognized as one of the best batsmen and captains in the history of the game. He was a former captain and cricket player for Sri Lanka. From 1997 to 2015, he was a member of the Sri Lankan national cricket team, where he amassed more than 12,000 runs in both Test and ODI matches. Additionally, he is one of the few cricketers to have recorded a century in each of a Test match's two innings. As a captain, Jayewardene was renowned for his astute strategic thinking and beautiful stroke play. After retiring, he continued to train and advise young cricket players in Sri Lanka and other countries. He has also worked as an analyst and commentator for many media sources.
